The Experian Experience

Before you can do anything to investigate your credit report, you have to get your credit report. Recently, the laws have changed and ever year you can get a free copy of your credit report, for this purpose. Although you can use other sites such as freecreditreport.com or annualcreditreport.com these do sites do not directly relate to the credit reporting agencies, therefore are also not the easiest to navigate to efficiently investigate your credit and remove those negative items. To make this simple for you the reader or customer I have broken this down into each reporting agency section to explicitly lay out how to do the investigation for each credit reporting agency and the steps needed for each one.

If you do not have a copy of your credit report there are two ways to get it from Experian:

1: Go to http://www.experian.com/reportaccess/

Once here click where it says “Get My Report Now”. It will then ask you for information about you. You will need to be able to answer everything they ask you. Below is a screen shot of the information I am referring too. If you have recently been denied credit, be sure to enter that information as well. If you have not been denied recently, enter in the info of the most recent denial, and set the date to the day or two days before the actual date when you do this.

2: You can also do this by mail I you wish and the address to request you report is:

          Experian
          PO Box 9556
          Allen, TX 75013

Send a letter with your name, address, phone number, social security number, and birthday.

Mailing Address for Requesting your report and sending your audit letters:

          Equifax Credit Information Services, Inc
          P.O. Box 740241
          Atlanta, GA 30374

B: Website

          www.equifax.com

To investigate your credit report it is:

          www.investigate.equifax.com

There are two things to this: If you do not have a report at all, you will still get the same screen as if you had a report with you. Refer to getting your report and how to investigate.

C: Getting your report

Equifax’s website is not as user friendly as it should be. Experian and Transunion can easily be done online as far as getting your report. Equifax is not quite as simple. I have found that for an Equifax report, you are best off to try calling them at 1-800-685-1111 and obtaining your report or sending in a letter to the address below. During the phone call they will ask you some basic info.

NOTE: What they have on file and what is correct may not match in which case you are best to send them a letter. If this happens send them a letter requesting a copy of your report. Refer to the “Obtain my report-Equifax” letter that came with this set to accomplish getting your Equifax report by mail. Address is noted above.

D: How to Investigate

Once you get your report, you can then investigate your report three ways online, on the phone, or by mail. For the first time we want to do online for this we go here:

          www.investigate.equifax.com

Once here it will give some option at the top is where you will want to enter the zip code for where you live as it is listed on your report.

NOTE: This page may change as time goes on.

After entering your zip code click on submit, and this will bring you to a new page. Once you have this page up, click on next and it will take you to:

Enter the report number. This will be the ten digit number on the report. Fill in the information here on this page as it requests it, and be sure the number and the info you enter is what is listed on the report. Enter the code, and then click on Start dispute. It will ask you for the contact info on the report, and then ask you to enter the accounts, and the reasons you wish for them to be investigated.

If you do not have a report at all at the page above after entering the zip code, you will use the link at the top of this page that says:

“If you do not have a report number Click Here”.

That link will take you to Transunion...

B: Website

          www.transunion.com

C: Getting your report

To get your Transunion report, you can use mail, phone or the web. I have found that online and mail work perfectly fine for doing this. Generally when you need to go by phone is for your personal information, although Transunion gives you ample opportunity to edit and dispute this while investigating your report. In which case online and by mail should work out fine here.

To get started and get you report you will need to go to their website as noted above. To investigate you will need to go through these steps. On the very first page click where it says “Dispute” near the bottom of the page.
Screen Shot of Main Page:

Once here and to do this online click where it says “online”. This will bring you to the next screen.

NOTE: if for some reason you have been to transunion’s site previously and do not remember your login and password you will need to call them and get that taken care of as there is no way around this other than to remember what it was.

If you have been to their site before and do remember your login and password go ahead and click where it says “Returning Click Here” The next screen will appear:

From here simply log in and begin your investigation.
If you have not done anything and this is your first time click where it says: “First Time Here” the following screen will then come up:

Click next:  Click Accept. Once done you will be logged in and can then begin your investigation online.

If for any reason, you cannot access your report online, there are many reasons for this, what you have entered as information may not be what they have listed on you report and you will need to use either phone or mail to get your report to get started. For obtaining your report by mail use the letter titled “Transunion-report-Inquiry”
For obtaining your report by phone, dial the number noted above and follow the prompts. If for some reason this gives you trouble as well you can call them right back and keep pressing the number two. This should get you a person.
